Club hears presentation on ‘Scandalous Women’
A January meeting of the Fredonia Shakespeare Club was an optional meeting due to illness.
Karin Cockram was able to present a short keynote presentation on “Scandalous Women in Literature and Art: Aphrodite to Zenia” to the 11 members in attendance. The presentation was an alphabetically-arranged showing of 26 women (or groups of women) from ancient mythology to modern artists, from five continents, across the lifespan, from movies to television to books, and from museums to architecture who were shown by authors or artists of the time in a scandalous light.
Becky Sharp, Edna Pontellier, the Guerrilla Girls, Hester Prynne, Katniss Everdeen, Nancy Drew, Uhura, Wonder Woman, Xi Shi and “Yo Mama’s Last Supper,” were among those topics touched on during the presentation. It was a fascinating look at what has been considered scandalous in the past, and what is deemed scandalous now.
